In many ways “Dune” is the story of our past, our present, and the possibilities. And, this is why it will always be a classic for modern times.

Amazing book. Read this one, and if you are impressed, read the 2nd, and possibly 3rd book in the series. Beyond that, it gets riddiculous. You won't like any of the further volumes unless you think that the Dune series is the greatest story every told. Also, dont waste your time with the movie. I read the book before hand and had to stop the film on 5 or 6 occasions to explain what was actually happening to my wife.

It has been called the finest science fiction novel of all time. I have issue with this sort of endorsement because it says that in the entire future no one will ever write a better novel. But I make an exception for this book. If not the greatest sci-fi novel of all time it is at least one of the greatest novels I've ever read. It takes about a hundred pages to really get into it, but it is worth it. Stop reading reviews and go read this book. A truly great book.

This book was so inspiring. It's as if a veil has been lifted over my clouded eyes. (poetic...) This has been the best book I have ever read. The storyline is deep and twisted, and complex. It brought me on a adventure that left my exhilarated. Although I must say that this book is not for everyone. My friends have come back saying it is boring, long and confusing. But if you want a great story give it a try. You might surprise yourself.

A rich beautiful universe peopled with the complex, the deceptive, and the dangerous. Excellently imagined universe.

I got two thirds the way through this book before putting it down, due to the fact that I was bored stiff. I spent more time learning about politics and goofy whiz-bang futuristic doodads than getting into the story. I feel bad for saying this, since so many people hold Dune in high regard. Just not for me. If you're like me and get partway through this book still craving a good sci-fi read (with a story that doesn't put you into a coma), then check out The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell.

Dune is an incredible piece of fiction, though not for everyone. This book is very political, and friends of mine whom I have tried to pressure into reading it have returned it to me without finishing the first chapter. If you love science fiction, push through the unfamiliar language at the beginning, it's worth it in the end. Also save yourself the heart ache and don't try to read the sequels. You've been warned.

Probably one of the best science fiction novels ever written. This book is timeless.

I've re-read this book countless times. I always marvel at the many layers of invented history that Herbert used to add depth to this other-worldly story of vengeance and coming of age.
