Notes:
The index identifies those people (men, women, children) who were given government-assisted passages to New Zealand under the Public Works and Immigration Act 1870 (usually known as the Vogel Scheme) and who are recorded on surviving lists. These lists, compiled by the Agent-General in London, are primarily a financial record, but as well as apportioning the cost of each passage, the lists give details of each emigrant's age, occupation and county of origin. Also indexed are people who emigrated under an alternative (but very much smaller) scheme, set up by the Immigrants Land Act 1873. The records indexed are not lists, but registers compiled at the various ports of entry and at the Immigration Dept. head office. The sequence of registers is incomplete. In some cases the name of the ship and the year of its arrival in New Zealand are given.
The index to the Social Security (SS) shipping lists are divided between Wellington records, Auckland records, and minor port records. The index was compiled on a divided basis and has not been integrated. Passenger and ship names and year of arrival are given. The Shipping index identifies voyages to New Zealand for which passenger lists are held at National Archives. Index to coroners' inquests is an index to the Register of inquests received by the Justice Dept, 1888-1926. It shows the year of the inquest, its subject (the person who had died), whether the person was male or female, and where the inquest was held. It also records the date of the receipt of the inquest and the cause of death as determined by the inquest.
Microreproduction of originals held at National Archives of New Zealand, Wellington, New Zealand.
