Yet when his daughter is born, he sees immediately that she has Down's Syndrome. Rationalizing it as a need to protect Norah, his wife, he makes a split-second decision that will alter all of their lives forever. He asks his nurse to take the baby away to an institution and never to reveal the secret. But Caroline, the nurse, cannot leave the infant. Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child herself. So begins this story that unfolds over a quarter of a century - in which these two families, ignorant of each other, are yet bound by the fateful decision made that long-ago winter night. Norah Henry, who knows only that her daughter died at birth, remains inconsolable; her grief weighs heavily on their marriage. And Paul, their son, raises himself as best he can, in a house grown cold with mourning. Meanwhile, Phoebe, the lost daughter, grows from a sunny child to a vibrant young woman whose mother loves her as fiercely as if she were her own." "The Memory Keeper's Daughter articulates a silent fear close to the heart of every mother: What would happen if you lost your child, and she grew up without you?"--BOOK JACKET.

Add a CommentThis was a beautiful and sad story. Some other reviewers may find it has a "slow" pace, but I do not feel this is a reason to fault it. The book deals with emotion, reaction and consequence of decisions from the characters' past decisions. It is a story of the torment of the mind and heart. It is realistic and takes the time to investigate each character's sentiments thoroughly. If you're into this intimate human perspective, you will definitely enjoy this read.
This book is really slow, it could have been a good story if it was better written.
I couldn't put this book down at first. By midway, the author got caught up in loss of momentum and overly dramatic digging (and continued digging) into each characters' childhood. I got so tired of the druggery that I sped read through to the end. I wouldn't recommend it.
A good read! Kim Edwards paints a vivid picture of the time period. I enjoyed the story even though it was sad. There were a few twists in the story that took me by surprise which kept me reading into the night. Would have liked to see the story go further at the end.
A family torn apart by a secret. The effects ripple out from the secret keeper to his wife and son. In trying to help his family, this father and doctor harms them all.
An excellent read. The horror of what can happen to children born with disability. Lots of heart.
Striking story of how a husband/doctor decides to rid of a child and asks his nurse to "take care of it". As a result, she takes in the infant and raises her to be a beautiful young woman. While the husband must face music with his wife where she mourns indefinitely for the loss of her child, unknowingly, is still alive. Some twists and turns in the story to keep the suspense intriguing. Recommend.
A very sad story but worth reading.
Sad story on so many levels. I skimmed thru the first half of the book. Too much detail on irrelevant things.
Human dynamics...+++ Young doctor & wife Twins...one with Downs syndrome He sends that baby away...results in their lives Could not put this book down
