Add a CommentExcellent acting and very real story-line. I highly reccommend this movie!
This is just a great movie. It covers how the German secret police monitored East German citizens. It keeps you engaged and wanting more. There are surprising twists in the story. It covers a topic that I grew up hearing about, but never really understood. The movie shifts into the future and shows how individuals with so much power melt back into society.
A chilling look into the darker side of life in East Germany. No romanticizing of the Berlin Wall here! At the same time a haunting reminder that human goodness can survive in even the most oppressive dictatorship.
outstanding glimpse at what living in a police state is like; and the bleak choices good people must make. The fear that people live with is a constant undercurrent. Highly recommended.
Excellent! Big Brother has a conscience, poignant, you won't forget this in a hurry
A very subtle but powerful movie. Minimal violence.
Excellent screenplay & directing by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. Superb acting by Ulrich Mühe (Wiesler). Facing the dilemma of ideology or conscience, what would an East German secret agent, or other mortals do? Find out in this gripping story about choice & humanity. See it, & be prepared for some soul-searching.
Brilliant! And thats from someone who usually looses interest in a movie half way through if not sooner!
Having not seen this picture first, I remember thinking Pan's Labyrinth got snubbed when Lives of Others won the Academy Award for best foreign picture in 2007. Now I can testify the Academy got it right. This film is much more than grim; the story is suspenseful and the ending is satisfying.
This will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and is worth watching till the end. Enjoy, this movie is a surprise!
