Add a CommentI liked the lyrical language. The sisters were convincing in their restlessness and desire to be protected. It was dark no doubt about it.
It was okay, but suffered from some major flaws. There were multiple first person narrators, which got slightly confusing a couple times. I think it should have ended about halfway through chapter 13 because everything after that just dragged on and didn't feel like it had a point since all of the major conflicts had already been resolved. Also, it shouldn't be marketed for teenagers. I'm not saying that teenagers shouldn't read it (I'm 18 and I could have handled it at 14), it's just that it's not what one would expect from a YA novel. Notice how reviews say that it's very dark and graphic? Well, it's only dark and graphic compared to other YA novels. As far as writing and level of thought is concerned, it's very YA, but the subject matter is not. I think it's only marketed for teenagers because it's too simplistic to fly with an adult audience (I really don't understand why it won the world fantasy award).
Let's just say I finished it. I found the book was hard to get into and when I did I found it to be rather disturbing. It took me more that a handfuls of sittings to complete and I doubt that I would read it again.
i thought this book was pretty horrible and that the author must be genius in a terrible dark and twisted way- worth exploring if u are curious about strange things, not exactly light reading
An intricately woven story of the cruelties encountered in life and the courage that is found in unexpected places. This book is not for the faint of heart. A story that will stay with you long after you have finished the book.
