In an act of imaginative will Jenner assembles factions and ephemera, poems and scraps that summon in a glow of light other diverse characters, objects and places: France, ham radio, World War I, trains, TB, her grandfather Harry (who saw Houdini perform in London), Katherine Mansfield and Paraparaumu. Dear Sweet Harry is a tender and virtuoso "Hey presto!" with a global reach and an offbeat charm, unlike anything else in New Zealand literature.

Add a CommentWinner of the 2011 NZSA Jessie Mackay Best First Book Award for Poetry. Paul Diamond, Judging panel convenor and Te Reo Māori Advisor for the Awards, said that the judging panel found Jenner’s work to be a fascinating and quite original miscellany of lyric poems, short prose texts, historical-documentary material, and autobiographical personae – all gathered together around the historical figure of 'Dear Sweet Harry' Houdini, the exemplary escape artist and masterful illusionist.
