People can plug into OASIS to play, go to school, earn money, and even meet other people (or at least they can meet their avatars), and for protagonist Wade Watts it certainly beats passing the time in his grim, poverty-stricken real life. Along with millions of other world-wide citizens, Wade dreams of finding three keys left behind by James Halliday, the now-deceased creator of OASIS and the richest man to have ever lived. The keys are rumored to be hidden inside OASIS, and whoever finds them will inherit Halliday's fortune. But Halliday has not made it easy. And there are real dangers in this virtual world. Stuffed to the gills with action, puzzles, nerdy romance, and 80s nostalgia, this high energy cyber-quest will make geeks everywhere feel like they were separated at birth from author Ernest Cline."

Add a CommentRecently finished "Ready Player One"... an excellent read. I'm not much of a gamer per se but if you grew up in or around the 70's and 80's and are familiar with the Pop culture of that time (incuging "video games" such as Pac Man, movies like A Space Odessy, Star Wars and music from Duran Duran etc) this could be just as enjoyable for you as it would be for a mall rat that spent every last quarter at the arcade. It has received good reviews and was discussed on NPR Radio a while back (where I heard about it).
I loved this book! It was an action-packed quest with tons of 80's pop culture making it extra interesting for someone who grew up in that decade. Super and super nerdy!
If you were a child of the 80s or 90s, this book is a MUST read - pop culture reigns king in this crazy tale from the creator of Fan Boys. I can't gush enough about this book. It's hilarious, makes you say "I remember that!" out loud in public places/snort laugh at inappropriate moments, and has a character you believe in and love. I loved it so much I checked out the audiobook as well - read by none other than Wil Wheaton. Perfection all around, and one of the few novels that has achieved perfection in my eyes. I will revisit this one often, and recommend it to everyone I meet!
Simply put, this book lives up to the hype! I just finished "Ready Player One," and am honsetly thinking about and going out and buying my own copy so I can read it again and again. I was a child during the 80s and was able to remember a lot of the random geeky stuff Cline put in the book. The characters are fun and believeable. This is probably one of the best books that I have had a chance to read this year. If you want something that will grab your attention and keep it, to the point that you have trouble putting the book down, this is it. Even if you were not someone who grew up in the 80s or your not really into "geeky" stuff, you should still read this book. It is one of the best of 2011 according to Amazon for a reason. Get on this list for it now and decide if you are "ready reader one."
i was teen in 80s and i loved this book and my teenager son read this book and absolutely loved it. five stars!
I'm neither a gamer nor achild of the '80s, but I absolutely oved this mile-a-minute, nostalgic, dystopian/utopian page turner. It's crying out to be a movie!
I was not sure if I would like this book when I got it as a gift but I totally agree with many other reviewers that this is a super fun read. I grew up in the 80s and love science fiction/fantacy books and movies. I could hear the 80s tunes playing in my head at each reference and that made the book extra fun. This book may not win any awards but it holds your attention easily and has some fun twists. Plus a classic 80s story booke ending.
I finished this book in one sitting - I couldn't put it down! I am reading it to my teenage daughter and she is thoroughly enjoying it too, even though she was not around during the 80's and doesn't get all the references. Just a really enjoyable story.
Someone finally put the knowledge/trivia to use. Such a good book. I had trouble putting this book down.
Such fun! This book isn't great literature but it's so fun to read that I couldn't put it down. I've never played a video game, or D&D, or even listened to half of the music the author mentions, but I laughed aloud so many times while reading this that it was surprising. Reading Ready Player One was like going to the Saturday matinee where one gives one's self over to the movie and roots for the good guys. We so want a great adventure and then have the good guys win in the end. For me, that's what this book is about - hours of giving one's self up to the book, having a grand adventure, and then rooting for the good guys. Very satisfying.
