The restaurant will be over-priced and pretentious, the head waiter will bore on about the organically certified free-range this and artisan-fed that, and almost everything about Serge, especially his success, will infuriate Paul. But as the evening wears on it becomes clear that tonight's dinner will be even more difficult than usual. There is something the two couples have to discuss. It's about their teenage sons and the very bad thing they have been doing. And it's about how far two sets of parents will go to save their children from the consequences of their actions.

Comment
Add a CommentI could not put this book down, and stayed up very late to finish it. I loved everything about it. What a refreshing change to read a thriller that is so riveting and compelling, without relying on gruesome murder and forensic details. An interesting, thought-provoking book.
Could be described as the Dutch version of The slap. It’s a quite chilling tale of two couples at a fancy restaurant and it operates on the principle of the unreliable narrator in that the man telling the tale is a good liberal (like all of us!) and we can’t help but be on his side until we find out what has happened and his reaction to it. A creepy and convulsively readable novel. Best reads of 2012: Philip Tew, Selection and Access Librarian, shares his top novels of 2012.
