My best reads 2011

Annotation:I love reading about America's southwest and this is a powerful tale of the modern day borderlands where people and drug smuggling corrupts communities.

Annotation:Another book I had to buy for myself. A classic selection of her recipes. Worth reading also for her evocation of the food and places that she loved.

Annotation:Nancy Power is a Californian landscape designer considered one of the best and most influential in America today. Her gardens are beautiful and this beautiful book does them justice.

Annotation:This is a wonderful book on many levels - first as a book object with beautiful design and paper and then for the content - really interesting ideas about building homes and how we live in them. Definitely a book for Christchurch now.

Annotation:An absorbing history of Paris. Everything from the catacombs to Marie Antoinette to Napoleon - fascinating stories you just couldn't imagine.

Annotation:Another wonderful cookbook from Greg Malouf. The recipes are great and the pictures and commentary give you a fascinating picture of Iran.

Annotation:I loved this one so much I brought my own copy. Brilliant story telling.

Annotation:I love cookbooks and this one deserved all the awards it got.

Annotation:I haven't read comics since my Classic Comics days but this is one of two on my list. Magical and mysterious -it just appealed to me.

Annotation:This book crept in gently under the radar. A local, distinct character with small town South Island and the lure of the Southern Alps wonderfully created.
