2011 Best Books

Annotation:My only regret about reading this book is that I didn't watch some of Lewin's YouTube videos first - then I could have read the book with his accent. But seriously: I laughed, I cried, I texted entire paragraphs to friends. You don't need to love physics to enjoy this book - and I guarantee you'll love physics are wee bit once you're finished.

Annotation:You know how sometimes you love a book, but the sequel doesn't live up to your expectations? Not the case here. The Magician King surpassed The Magicians to me - chiefly because of the character Julia. The sheer power of this woman almost bounced off the page. Wow!

Annotation:I liked the concept of a Queenstown-like resort town over on the West Coast of the South Island. The fantasy elements of the story were well handled and the characters were memorable.

Annotation:Strachan writes beautifully. Her prose sings to me. Love love love.

Annotation:I'm normally not a fan of books set in the distant future, or books set in space, but the recommendation from the CCL blog (http://cclblog.wordpress.com/2011/01/08/across-the-universe-hottest-ya-novel-of-2011/) was too good to ignore.

Annotation:Some of the stories in these memoirs are so outrageous they have to be true. Amusing and engrossing.

Annotation:When it comes to world building. Rees gets 10/10 for me. Can't wait to read what happens next in the crazy Demi Monde.

Annotation:One of my e-book reads! With A Little Help is Cory's latest short story collection. I've enjoyed his novels (particularly Little Brother and Makers) and love reading Boing Boing (http://boingboing.net/). WALH is his first venture into self-publishing.

Annotation:This book has two authors (Trish Cook and Brendan Halpin) with two first person characters narrating the book a chapter at a time. We see both sides of a blended family coming together. I found the characters well constructed and believable.

Annotation:2010?! What!! Well, my hold only got to me in 2011 so I'm putting it on this list. I wept with the rest of Earth when Pluto was demoted from planet status, but having read Brown's memoir of why he "killed" Pluto, I am now firmly in the eight-planet Solar System camp. I love how the author mixed stories of his family life into the astronomy discoveries - particularly the entire chapter he devoted to his daughter, whom he must love very much. Highly recommended!

Annotation:What do you mean this is book 11 in a top 10? I don't know what you're on about... This is the final book in Stiefvater's Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy. Unforgettable characters, palpable tension and beautiful writing typify Maggie Stiefvater's work and this book is no exception.
