Wild Ōtautahi

Inspired by Gavin Bishop’s illustrations from his book Wildlife of Aotearoathis exhibition tells a story about the wildlife habitats of Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Do you know how many different spiders live in Canterbury? Have you ever seen a weta motel? How far do eels travel to mate? Do you know the name of a fish that likes to sunbathe? Explore Wild Ōtautahi in the Te Pito Huawera / Southbase Gallery and find the answers. Meander along Gavin Bishop’s original illustrations of animals living in our city, explore their living habitats and meet some of the heroes who help them survive. Can you be a hero too?

Gavin Bishop
Gavin Bishop is an award winning children’s picture book writer and illustrator who lives and works in Christchurch. As author and illustrator of over 70 books, his work ranges from original stories to retellings of Maori myths, European fairy stories, and nursery rhymes.

Wild Ōtautahi is inspired by his book, Wildlife of Aotearoa (2019), which explores New Zealand’s unique habitats and incredible wildlife through his marvellous illustrations.
