LA Mitchell

L A Mitchell has been a stealth operator in New Zealand Music, her credentials will surprise you, having performed support for Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder and Guy Sebastian. She worked alongside Dave Dobbyn, Bic Runga, Tim Finn, Anna Coddington, Sola Rosa & Dukes. Her name in New Zealand is synonymously connected with the juggernaut group, ‘Fly My Pretties’ backed by Black Seeds frontman, Barnaby Weir, and more recently she spun heads in a run of spectacular shows as a member of the Bill Withers Social Club alongside Troy Kingi & Dallas Tamaira (Fat Freddie’s Drop). For many, her Live at the Matterhorn release was a sensation in the underground soul & jazz audiences with an enduring set of sincere admirers. Her most recent single, “Mother”, reached #4 on the ALT NZ charts and still sits in the top 50. Her other recent work has been with her husband, Matt Barus, on their duo project Terrible Sons, Finalists for the 2024 Folk Artist Tui. They’ve quietly amassed over
21 million streams of the duos’ acoustic indie folk.
Her work as a Vocal Tutor has led her to create a voice program called ‘Revive Your Voice. She has been leading people back to their voices as a form of therapy and release, she has a passion for the benefits of communal singing, and using the singing voice to release and relieve emotion. LA Mitchell currently works at Canterbury University as a Contemporary Vocal tutor.
