Zuhra and Inara have grown up in the Citadel of the Paladins, an abandoned fortress where legendary, magical warriors once lived before disappearing from the world including their Paladin father the night Inara was born. On that same night, a massive, magical hedge grew and imprisoned them within the citadel. Inara inherited their father's Paladin power; her eyes glow blue and she is able to make plants grow at unbelievable rates, but she has been trapped in her own mind because of a "roar" that drowns everything else out leaving Zuhra virtually alone with their emotionally broken human mother. For fifteen years they have lived, trapped in the citadel, with little contact from the outside world until the day a stranger passes through the hedge, and everything changes.

From Library Staff

Fantasy, sibling relationships, separated worlds. Zuhra has spent her life trapped by a hedge around her home, along with her distant mother, house-helper and sister who is only "with" them for minutes at a time.

A fantasy read filled with Paladins and mythical creatures. Zuhra and her sister have been trapped in her family home for as long as she can remember, surrounded by a poisonous magical hedge. But when a stranger is let through, worlds collide.

An enjoyable story. It took me a bit to get into it, but once it got into the action, I was hooked. The Paladins and the alternate world are really well described, and the main character's motivations and actions considering she's been locked in her home with only a few people are very consistent. If you like the concepts of other worlds and sibling relationships from The Chronicles of Narnia, with a maturer writing style, then this is good for you.
No swears, no sex, just a good ol' fantasy write.
