Fag and Ginnie, two sisters growing up in working-class Christchurch in the 1930s and 1940s look at their lives, describing their family, their schooling, and their fantasies.

This is the story of the lives and aspirations of two sisters, Ginnie and Fag, growing up in working-class South Christchurch in the 1930s and 1940s. This novel, the first in a family trilogy, has a strong historical documentation lean to it.

In the 1930s and 40s Ginnie and Fag grow up in working-class Christchurch. Their story continues in the sequels The shining city and Mum.

I read this book in high school for NCEA English, and loved it. A well-written journey into the past. Even though it's set in 1930s and 1940s Christchurch, there are elements that could be Christchurch today.
