Kaumatua o Tamaterau Life Stories through the lens captures in book form with extended story narratives, the wonderful Kaumatua o Tamaterau Life Stories and Photographic Exhibition that went on show at Tamaterau Community Hall in December 2021. The featured contributors; all of Maori descent, have witnessed ninety years of changes within the landscape, from those early times when the Whangarei Heads Road was a horse track that wound its way along the coast past raupo whare that once dotted beachfronts. Their narratives tell stories of times when as children they ran barefoot across land and beach to get to school, worked hard on the land to help feed themselves and their families, recall the days when launches were the main means of transporting people and cream to Whangarei. What is unique about this book, is that the families represented within its pages, are all still occupying, living, and caring for their ancestral lands. All of them are related through a network of Iwi/hapu alliances, and neighbours to each other in the same ways their ancestors were. They are all getting on in age now though, and before long their wealth of living experiences will be lost forever. This book by no means captures the width and depth of their lifetimes; rather it provides a brief glimpse into the past life was about family, friends, working hard, supporting each other, respecting and preserving our natural resources, and most importantly providing kaitiakitanga over their ancestral lands."--Publisher's description.
