Quotes
Add a Quote“I've always said to myself that if a little pocket calculator can do it why shouldn't I?”
― Roald Dahl, Matilda
“With frightening suddenness he now began ripping the pages out of the book in handfuls and throwing them in the waste-paper basket.
Matilda froze in horror. The father kept going. There seemed little doubt that the man felt some kind of jealousy. How dare she, he seemed to be saying with each rip of a page, how dare she enjoy reading books when he couldn't? How dare she?”
― Roald Dahl, Matilda
“Sometimes Matilda longed for a friend, someone like the kind, courageous people in her books.”
― Roald Dahl, Matilda

It's a funny thing about mothers and fathers. Even when their own child is the most disgusting little blister you could ever imagine, they still think that he or she is wonderful.

What she needed was just one person, one wise and sympathetic grown-up who could help her.

Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog. Make sure everything you do is so completely crazy it's unbelievable.

"We don't hold with book-reading," Mr. Wormwood said. "You can't make a living from sitting on your fanny and reading story-books."

Parents never underestimated the abilities of their own children. Quite the reverse. Sometimes it was well nigh impossible for a teacher to convince the proud father or mother that their beloved offspring was a complete nitwit.
Summary
Add a SummaryThe parents of the five-year-old Matilda Wormwood have no interest in their daughter, but if they did, they would have discovered that she is incredibly and unusually smart and gifted. Matilda taught herself to read at three years old, though the only actual books in the house were a cookbook and magazines. When she asks for a real book for herself, her father rudely turns her down. In spite of this, Matilda looks up the address of the local library, where she finishes all the children's books within a short time, thus leaving her to read adult novels, which she really enjoys. The librarian gives Matilda her own library card, and she is able to borrow books to read at home.

Add a CommentMatilda is quite a bright girl, except her parents would rather watch TV than support her. Her intelligence becomes a tool for her in troubling circumstances when a tough headmistress pops up into her life. Kindness, perseverance and staying true to oneself are common themes.
Dahl does it again with this fabulous read!
I gave this book to my little sister and she loves the story! Matilda's journey in the book has so many interesting characters, like her dishonest dad and her angry headmistress Trunchbull. Although my sister asked me to define some words used in the book, it is an overall accessible novel for all ages! It's such a fantastic story about a little girl who uses her wits to overcome obstacles.
Matilda by Roald Dahl is a classic that I enjoyed reading when I was a kid. It’s about a child named Matilda who enjoys reading. Whenever her parents mistreat her, she plays a variety of pranks to get even. She befriends her teacher, Miss Honey and discovers the backstory between her teacher and the abusive headmistress Miss Trunchbull. The book incorporates a rebellious environment and supernatural powers that enhances the experience, not to the point of focusing entirely on magical powers. This balance would make it quite the read.
the villains cooked up by roald dahl are great. the trunchbull is no different.
Matilda’s family has never really acknowledged her. They left her alone in her room and didn’t teach her to read, or help her walk, so she had to figure this out on her own. It may seem like she has a horrible life, but she had a hidden power.
Once again, Roald Dahl has written a wonderful book that has a creative plot and a satisfying ending.
I gave this book five stars because it was amazing and very adventurous; highly recommended.
I have an embarrassing confession. I've watched plenty of movie adaptions of Roald Dahl's books, but never actually read one. This is a travesty on my past as a proud book lover. I decided to remedy this situation by reading the delightful and hilarious Matilda. Matilda is a great book hero: she loves books and learning, she's brave and selfless, and she knows how to cleverly punish adults who deserve to be taught a lesson. Roald Dahl has a wonderful sense of humor and word play. I'm not sure if I would've appreciated as a child. He knows how to speak to what kids fantasize about. Miss Trunchbull is perhaps one of the worst villains ever created. The illustrations by Quentin Blake really bring the story to life. I've seen the movie and now I want to see the Broadway play.
One of my favourite stories! Love this one so much!
It's always a good time for a book about a smart, determined girl who pushes back against tyranny and stupidity. Go Matilda!
As a child who loved to read, I was enthralled by the story of a young, precocious girl coming up against terrific and terrible obstacles. Full of hope for the future and love for goodness, this book will take you back to the realm of childhood.
From her terrible parents to the awful headmistress of Crunchem Hall, the odds are stacked against Matilda. But with a genius intellect and a smattering of revenge, she wormed her way into my heart. What child doesn’t dream of getting back at the unfair grownups?
In this tale of books and people, both good and bad, everybody can recapture the sense of childhood no matter how far away it might be. Recommended for children and parents alike, take a trip to discover Matilda Wormwood and her incredible powers, both mental and otherwise.
