Mak has always lived in care and longs for his own family. He is delighted when an eccentric single woman, Evelyn Cairns, expresses interest in adopting him. Suddenly all contact with her ceases and he is sent to new foster-parents, Robert and Gwendolyn, with whom relations go from bad to worse. Mak is grief-stricken when he learns of Miss Cairns' death. His foster parents take him on an overseas trip, using part of a legacy he receives from her estate, hoping this will bring them closer together. Instead Robert and Mak are left to start a new life on their own in Australia. Suggested level: intermediate, junior secondary.
