Tom Mahler's life is shattered when his son is killed. Unable to find solace or meaning he leaves Chicago for the remote property in New Zealand he has inherited from an uncle he never knew. Learning to survive on the isolated Mokau coast is daunting. It becomes more so when he is reluctantly caught in a confrontation over land. His admiration for the mercurial activist Ringatu Wherry then his relationship with a young half-caste woman incite the small community. However, it is his ambiguous friendship with a small boy that proves more dangerous when the boy's father, the reclusive farmer who intends to burn the forest is murdered. Tom Mahler is a man out of place. He is naïve, lost, loved and reviled. He is the prime suspect in a murder investigation.
