In the early days many of them were national as well as provincial politicians, and ever since the club's members have played a prominent part not only in the progress and expansion of Chirstchurch city and its productive hinterland, but in the development of New Zealand as a whole. Among them may be numbered scores of political and civic leaders, lawyers, doctors, architects, engineers, war heroes, academics, artists, literary figures, winemakers, business leaders and prominent agriculturalists. The Shagroon's Palace is not only an excellent celebration of the Christchurch Club's first 150 years, superbly illustrated and sourced, but also an absorbing social history of Canterbury and the men who made the province what it is today.
