Books on screen: Artemis Fowl, Good omens, and young adult romance

A whole clutch of novels have been turned into movies and TV series, or are due for release soon. Here's what to read, either in advance of watching on screen, or as a tasty, more fleshed-out mains to the movie or TV appetiser. Comedy Catch-22 - Joseph Heller's classic WWII satire is now a 6 episode series (via streaming platform Hulu). The cast includes George Clooney and Hugh Laurie, so… (more)

Harry Potter’s Birthday Celebrations

On Tuesday 31 July at Parklands Library and Fendalton Library (and a bit earlier on Friday 13 July at Shirley Library) Christchurch City Libraries will be celebrating Harry Potter Day. This is a day to recognise our enjoyment of J.K. Rowling's literary creation Harry Potter, fittingly on his birthday. Lovable, bespectacled Harry and his friends stormed into our collective minds over two… (more)

'Good Omens' is the spoof child of fantasy/sci-fi authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. A page-turning story and memorable characters make this one a comedic gem. Plot-wise, the apocalypse is scheduled for next Saturday, and everything appears to be going to plan except for a few small concern... Read More »

Both a classic and an old favourite, as well as being the funniest book about the end of the world anyone could hope to write. Worth re-reading again and again.

I've been watching the series this week and absolutely love it! So onward to the book!

A rollicking fantasy with a wry sense of humour. If you enjoy unique stories with numerous omniscient asides, no-sacred-cows social & humanity commentary, and out-of-left-field events that still tie together in a cohesive and wildly imaginative story... this fits the bill.
I started to watch the TV series (8 eps.), stopped a little past half-way to read the book, then went back to finish the series. Although similar in many ways: the book has more textual depth and added comedic value in its footnotes; the TV series pulls out all the stops with amazing visuals, Sheen & Tenant are excellent, and adds a bit more of an edgy ending not in the printed page.
I understand why the book has a rabid fan base. A highly recommended read.

Terrific book with the most unconventional characters in (or out0 of this world. A demon and an angel have been friends and sort of colleagues for thousands of years, but something brand new has happened and they have to deal with it. Also involving a witch, a crusader, a nice young man and a bunch of kids. One of the greatest reads of all time. It's my favorite.

Saw the TV series before reading the book and the TV series based on the book was entertaining and hilarious. The book is an entertaining read and I burst out laughing more than once while reading. Read the book, watch the TV series, both are worth the time taken. Enjoy!!!!!

A funny and memorable tour with an unlikely set of quirky characters. Pratchett and Gaiman's collaboration is every bit the joy ride you'd predict from the minds of these authors.

According to Agnes Nutter, the only reliable guide to the future, the world will be ending next Saturday, just after tea. This doesn’t sit well with a certain demon and fussy angel, who both quite like living on earth. It also just so happens that the Antichrist is missing. The humour that ripples throughout this work is unparalleled. Dry, satirical, and wickedly funny, Pratchett and Gaiman create some of the weirdest characters and circumstances ever imagined in fiction. The plot meanders quite a bit, especially when reading in eBook format, but the circumstances that happen along the way are compelling enough to keep the reader occupied throughout the novel. It’s these details that make Good Omens an enjoyable read, as opposed to the overall, somewhat predictable, plot. Recommended for fans of the authors other works and the Thursday Next Series by Jasper Fford. 4/5 stars

i read this book as part of 300 books everyone should read once list challenge featured on Listopia. I had started watching the netflix series and didn't think much of it. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover that the tv series was a book and i had the book. I enjoyed it so much more than i thought i would. it's not my typical style of reading, but it is a good book. I think i want to finish the netflix series now. also used this for a prompt in the Around the world in 52 books challenge- read a book about witches

Truly loved it. Funny, sharp, and very wholesome too. Each character can be a beloved character abd its amazing how human they're all written to be.

An angel and a demon try to stop the apocalypse since they enjoy life on earth too much to destroy it in a war.
This book is a fantastic read for those who enjoy British humor with a side of the occult. Both fans of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett will find something to love about the story.
