Found this book by chance on the shelf (or maybe it found me) and decided to give it a go as I had never read anything on Icelandic mythology. I was pleasantly surprised how good a read it was. I really got into the story and grew to care about the characters. It was a very easy read, thanks to Ms. Tobin's good writing. She really makes mythical Iceland come alive. I was completely immersed and lost in the history, geology and ancient lore of Iceland and looked forward to getting back to the story. A great escape into another time and place. I recommed it to Tolkien and mythology fans and readers looking for strong female characters. I was as transfixed reading this as I was as a kid reading Greek mythology, and it has inspired me to read more such stories.

Not what I had imagined and it was very good! Fulla lives in Iceland in 1000 CE, where Christianity's mercenaries are violently gaining ground. She lives with her grandfather because both of her parents are dead. Her grandfather wants to find a good match for her before he dies, and it certainly cannot be that Vili, the son of the man who killed Fulla's father.
Freya lives on the side of Mount Hekla far from Fulla's homestead. Freya lives in Asgard, an actual place that Odin and his people have seen fit to raise up to mythological status through tales.
There's fighting, revenge, giants, dwarves, chases, escapes, true love, and of course, volcanoes! It is Iceland after all.
