"Gifted cellist Mia awaits the verdict on her Juilliard audition and is brooding about the ways that leaving Oregon to pursue a career in music would complicate her life (for one, she'd be leaving her rocker boyfriend, Adam, behind). Then, when a peaceful drive with her family ends in a trag... Read More »

This was an emotional book to read. It was different to read a book based on a coma patients thoughts. It was a book impossible to put down, read it in one day. I really liked it and look forward to the sequel Where she went. I will read it again some time later. Its that good. Hope everyone enjoys this book and author. I plan to read more of her books.

Mia Hall, a seventeen year old cellist wakes up seeing her body on the ground. Sirens are heard, ambulances roll through the streets, bodies are found. Mia and her family go on a road trip when a sudden turn of events happen. On the icy roads, the car swivels while trying to avoid a car accident; then it flips. Mia wakes up seeing her very body before her; her brother and she are taken to the hospital. On that unfortunate day, her parents die. Mia gets stuck between the living and the dead. Her boyfriend, Adam, is a musician who tours around the city. After hearing this news, Adam rushes to the hospital with Mia's best friend. He begs her to live and sings her a song that was made for her. Will Mia decide to live and be with Adam, or will she decide to die and be with her family?

Mia Hall, a seventeen year old cellist, thinks she has a normal life. She has a boyfriend, a cute little brother named Teddy, got accepted into Juilliard School. That is, until one February snowy morning, she and her family goes for a car ride, and instantaneously loses her beloved family. She has to make decisions on whether to stay alive, or join her parents and brother. A great book, may drag a bit in the middle, but overall gripping and compelling.

I’d put off reading this book for a looooong time, because it seemed capital-S sad, but, oddly, this was less upsetting than I was actually expecting. When you begin a book knowing that something awful is about to happen to the characters, it makes it, to my mind, less sad than when it hits you unexpectedly three-quarters of the way through the book. That’s not to say that I wasn’t affected by this, because I was – I think Gayle Forman is just a lovely, lovely writer (I looooove Just One Day & Just One Year), and she did a better job at making Mia’s family feel real to me, and at making me feel like the parents had real lives of their own that were interesting entirely apart from their children, than possibly any YA book I’ve ever read. This was, of course, necessary if she wanted to make the loss of said parents have the appropriate amount of emotional impact (which it did), but I was just impressed at how such a short book could convey such a complex web of relationships in a way that felt complete. I’m looking forward to seeing how this story continues in the sequel (and also looking forward to the POV shift that said book apparently contains).

Started out really well but then midway started to drag . Kept reading only to find out what Mia did. Could have just went to the last page and found that out ! Found this to be not one of the Author's better books , she has written better .

This was a fairly enjoyable book for the most part. It had me captivated at the beginning, but I started to lose interest very fast. Overall I mainly liked the book, but I do not recommend it to people who have known friends/family to have been in a car wreck. I don't believe that the author addressed the topic as well as it should have. It's not something that only happens in books it really is a reality. I give this book a 3 star review.

I heard about this book because of the movie, and all my "fake fan" classmates that "devoted themselves" to this series. I didn't quite catch the whole phenomenon about the movie, but this book was pretty good. The relationship between Adam and Mia was somewhat realistic, but also tacky at parts. I guess it is supposed to be romantic, and cute, but it just didn't come to life for me that well. If one reads this book, and is thinking about the second: Don't. The whole plot just goes astray and changes everything later, and it is really pointless. One may as well end it off with the ending here. 4/5 stars

If I Stay had an interesting concept. Though the idea was good, it wasn't used to its full potential. Most of the material I found quite bland and uncaptivating. I was so disappointed since I had heard and read many wonderful things about the story. I found the characters difficult to relate to, and not quite realistic enough for the story line.

Seventeen year old Mia Hall has a loving family, supportive boyfriend and a huge decision she has to make, one she thought was everything: accept an offered position at Julliard for her chello skills, or stay with her family and the love of her life. But a car ride on a snow day turns tragic when a car accident kills Mia's family and throws Mia into a surreal, critical-state out of body coma. Mia is on the brink of life and death, and then she realizes that it's her choice if she lives or dies--and that some choices aren't as important as she thought they were.

I have to say, If I Stay was probably one of my favorite books! I would recommend If I Stay to anyone who wants a good, bittersweet tragic love story. Five stars:-)

Mia has so much in life: a loving family, friends, a boyfriend, musical talent for the cello that will take her to Julliard...but so much of it is taken away in an instant. Mia and her family get into a car accident that kills everyone in her family and leaves her in a coma. But a part of her is still awake, still has to chose whether she wants to wake up, whether she wants to stay, whether this world is a place she still wants to live in.

This book is all about Mia. Getting into a terrible car crash losing all hope and her close family. she's trying to choose if she should stay since she believes she has absolutely, positively nothing to live for. While in a coma can friends and family try to convince her to stay or will she go and continue living with her parents up there. I cannot say anything more. If you must find out I personally would suggest that you read it your self

MaryBar74 Oct 20, 2013

I read this book because its going to be a movie. To my surprise it was a drag out process for me. I'm not sure if its because I'm an adult reading a teen book but she just took way.... To long to figure out her outcome. Sometimes I just wanted to scream at the book lol.

Mia is on a routine drive with her family when the unthinkable happens, and her entire family is killed in an accident. Trapped outside of her physical body, Mia reflects on her life, and tries to choose whether to die or live.

In a single moment, everything changes. Seventeen-year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall riding along the snow-wet Oregon road with her family. Then, in a blink, she finds herself watching as her own damaged body is taken from the wreck...

A sophisticated, layered, and heart-achingly beautiful story about the power of family and friends, the choices we all make, and the ultimate choice Mia commands.

What if you had everything?
A gorgeous boyfriend who was madly in love with you?
Quirky hip parents who got you?
A musical talent that could take you anywhere?
What if your biggest problem in life was choosing which paths to take ?
Follow your first love-music- to New York City?
Or stay with your boyfriend , friends , and family?
What if one day you went for a drive . . .
And in an instant everything changed?
What if suddenly all the other choices were gone?
Except for one - the one that truly ever mattered ?
What would you do?
Stay . . .
If I Stay . . . .
If Mia Stays . . .
