"There were two rumours surrounding my great-great-grandfather Henry Summers: one, that his cabinet of curiosities drove him mad; and, two, that he murdered his first wife." Rosemary Summers is an amateur taxidermist and a passionate collector of tattoos. To her, both activities honour the deceased and keep their memory alive. After the death of her beloved grandfather, and while struggling to finish her thesis on gothic Victorian novels, she returns alone to Magpie Hall to claim her inheritance: Grandpa's own taxidermy collection, started more than 100 years ago by their ancestor Henry Summers. As she sorts through Henry's legacy, the ghosts of her family's past begin to make their presence known.

I read quite a lot of New Zealand fiction this year, but this was my favourite. This book combines a Gothic and glamorous otherness with a sharp observation of the everyday. It's a compelling piece of fiction that sucks you into its world. Brilliant.

Christchurch based writer of two acclaimed novels - Magpie Hall and The Sound of Butterflies. A talented writer able to evoke both Edwardian England and the Amazon and contemporary life.

A 'modern gothic' novel which shifts between Victorian and contemporary New Zealand, and covers everything from high-country farming to taxidermy to tattooing. Well reviewed.

Love this book! It has all my favourite reading elements in it - gothic romance with mystery and sinister goings-on, but with a modern setting, heaps of historical detail and a few amazingly dark and gorgeous twists and turns. Yum!
