Offered in 0 more formatsPart one of Godley Gifts consists of seven essays commissioned from actor/writer, David McPhail, to set the artworks of Godley Gifts in their historical context, including essays on the lives of John Robert Godley, his wife Charlotte, and his son Arthur, and an essay on James Edward FitzGerald. Part one also contains extensive photographic material, much of it published here for the first time. Part two of Godley Gifts is a brilliant work of imagination by author and artist, James Edward FitzGerald, Canterbury's first Superintendant and New Zealand's first Premier. Seadrift, the adventures of a yacht, is the first illustrated children's book written in New Zealand, and it was gifted to John Arthur Godley, the young son of Canterbury's founder. It was begun in Christchurch in 1851 and sent to Arthur in England in 1858. It is here published as an exact replica copy and no further such copies will ever again be reproduced. Part three of Godley Gifts reproduces - also for the first time - a collection of FitzGerald's watercolours, with which he created a farewell gift for his friend, John Robert Godley, when the Godleys returned home to England. The collection is a story in itself, of FitzGerald's voyage to the new colony and of early Canterbury scenes that he chose and painted to remind Godley of many achievements and happy times, in the infant Canterbury colony that he had founded.
