The masterpiece of dystopian fiction. Hoban paints a post-apocalyptic world that is less futuristic and more a leap back into the dark ages. Anna Smaill's The Chimes wears this book on its sleeve - in a wonderful way.

This book is a challenge to read and stick to, but worth persisting with the strange future dialect of English. If you enjoy languages generally, you will be able to pick it up as you go, though there are websites to help you interpret what is going on.

Like a Shakespeare play, you hardly notice that slowly you've started understanding the plot and the detail, and that you are well caught up in the book.

And there is magic to be found, beautiful descriptions such as Riddley running with the dogs, and his travels through post apocalyptic England.
