This short novel, set in Ireland and France, tells the story of two boyhood friends who enlist in the British army in 1914. In war they are torn apart by the same bigotries that had divided them as children. The author gives the reader a convincing account of life in the trenches and subtly defines the tragic experience of Ireland.
