a very comprehensive selection of the music in greenwich village when bob dylan arrived there in 1961- perhaps overshadowing some gems ,by becoming the 'new' voice of the village.

The Coen Brothers' new film, "Inside Llewyn Davis" is about a Dylan-esque folk singer in Greenwich Village in the early 60s. Before you see the film, check out this 2 disc collection, which offers a nice overview of the musical milieu of the time. Despite the title and Dylan's face on the cover, there are no Dylan songs, but, rather peers like Joan Baez, Pete Seeger and Simon & Garfunkel. The best songs are from the blues guys: Bukka White, Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, etc. It does give a sense of how much better Dylan was than most of his contemporaries. He may have ripped off the line "go way from my window" from John Jacob Niles, but his song it immortal and Niles's is unlistenable.
