This artist's book, published on the occasion of Francis Upritchard's exhibition In die Höhle (In hell) at the Vienna Secession in 2010, stands out in its extraordinary design and conception. The new installation's themes included the exhibition history of the institution as well as Hippie or New Age counter-cultures. Upritchard questions hegemonic attitudes of mainstream culture, and its definition, for example, of the 'exotic', or the differentiation between 'critical' and 'decorative'. The bestselling British author David Mitchell has created a parallel literary narrative to Upritchard's work with a new short story written especially for the book.
