I persevered until the end, and actually found it a bit of a let-down. I was not really enjoying the book but thought it would get better as I went along. I found the heroine not very sympathetic and the plot somewhat unbelievable. Actually, I think the mother's story might have been a better vantage point for this novel than the daughter's. Flashbacks and hauntings are well and good in a story but the ones here didn't really give me a sense that something had happened to the heroine back in her childhood; only that something had happened she had witnessed. I guess we were supposed to be carried along with her in her uncertainty but for me it wasn't working. I also understand that Madeleine was a red herring but think she could have been used to much more effect, as could the whole Aunt Peggy locket substory. I think this book missed the mark.

I agree that the main character is not the most likable, but I love a book that keeps me guessing.

I only got half way thru this and had to give up because the main character is so awful. Did not like her. Something weird happened in her childhood and I wanted to know what but I never got there.
