Go YA – WORD Christchurch Festival 2018

Go YA brought together three writers for young adults – Juno Dawson, Whiti Hereaka, and Yaba Badoe – to read from their novels. Alina's pick: A compelling (and a bit too realistic) depiction of life in a small town -- every mistake you make is observed and commented on by everyone else, and there are a lot of mistakes in this book to comment on. Bugs is about growing up in a small town in Aotearoa. Bugs, Jez and the new girl, Stone Cold share their last year at high school together. Relationships are formed and tested in true teenage angst. The story also reflects on how our education system still seems to be focused on vocation rather than education and the institutional racism still faced by young Maori students. Expectation is at the heart of the story - what expectations do you have for yourself and your future? What expectations (or lack or expectations) does society have for you?
A fun and fast paced story that is easy to relate to with humour and at times piognant statements that give you pause to think about the wider picture.
