No. 23 has a secret. In this gloomy, bedsit-riddled South London wreck, lorded over by a lecherous landlord, a horrifying collection quietly waits to be discovered. Yet all six residents have something to hide. Collette is on the run from her ex-boss; Cher is an underage children's home escapee; lonely Thomas tries to make friends with his neighbours; while a gorgeous Iranian asylum seeker and a 'quiet man' nobody sees try to keep themselves hidden. And there for them all is Vesta, a woman who knows everything that goes on in the house or thought she did. Then in the dead of night, a terrible accident pushes the six into an uneasy alliance. But one of them is a killer, expertly hiding their pastime, all the while closing in on their next victim.

Not bad. Some parts of the book were a bit lame and others were gruesome. I probably wouldn't recommend it or read any other books from this author.

LOVED this novel! Fast moving, hard to put down story. I felt moved by each character and appreciated this "mystery" from the perspective of the trapped, impoverished "perpetrators". I can't wait to read The Wicked Girls and hopefully see more from this author.

very hard to get into...very LONDON-y....if you aren't British or very familiar with the country and culture it is hard to understand.

The author is getting too of much of a free pass from professional reviewers (Stephen King appears to be under a contractual obligation to give a generic favorable quote for every one of her books!). Reeks of a much better PR effort than writing ability.

There is very little mystery, thrilling moments or horror (as opposed to revulsion to the content description) in the book. The characters muddle through like actors in a play with idiotic dialogue forced on them even in what should be tense moments. The twists appear very lame.

There isn't even consistency in characters. Cher, whose daily vocation is to shoplift and mug people pretending to solicit, has pangs of conscience in taking found money belonging to a dead man that has been tormenting her.

Not worth reading for anybody except those few women who relish stories of favorable/empowering endings for women characters despite vulnerabilities, however bad the story might be.
