Moon Over The Manukau commences with the rural engagement of Ben Chester and Priscilla Caldwell on New Year's eve 1900. Simple as the engagement is it will lead to a saga of love and compassion, industry and pleasure and above all, generosity. As the story expands so the characters move from the valley into the wide world, yet they always return to the valley home of Kowhai, particularly for celebrations. For those unfamiliar with Auckland: the original town was sited on an isthmus, with the Waitemata Harbour and main port to the north, and the shallow Manukau Harbour to the south. Between this harbour and the west coast is a strip of land known as the Awhitu Peninsula. Pollok is half way along the peninsula, and the valley farm with the fictional name of Kowhai between it and the coast. Imperial measurements are used until the date of change to metric, therefore there are conversion charts at the beginning of each book. Each Book has a character list. While characters are fictional, many of the events are real; such as the opening of His Majesty's Theatre, the grounding of the Reliance, the strikes and Auckland Exhibition of 1913, and the Great War (WWI) goes without saying. The novel was originally written in 1962-3, revised and expanded since then into six volumes, the six novels published as hard copies between 2006 and 2010, having proved to be very popular with library users.
