I'm partial to Bernard Cornwell's writing. Gallows Thief is no exception. His knowledge of the state of society in England following the Napoleonic Wars and the plight of soldiers returning looking for work and trying to fit back into society is well told. The Gallows Thief was a person who, as a last resort, had but few days to determine a man's innocence of a crime prior to his hanging following his sentence by the Court.Often witnesses could not be found to substantiate their claims. This was a particularly nasty murder. Rider Sandman is given the task. All told with Cornwell's customary style and dry humour.I was hoping for a sequel but nothing so far.
