But it was the weather that added an unpredictable element to an event that would witness eight safety car interventions. Holden Racing Teams Garth Tander was on a mission after a disappointing outing in 2008, taking pole position in damp conditions and putting new co-driver Will Davison at the front of the grid for Sundays start. The race began in wet conditions, as Davisons HRT car led from the start and a number of cars pitted early for slicks when the rain subsided. A late charge through the field from Jamie Whincup in the Triple Eight BF Falcon saw the reigning champ leading the race with around thirty laps to go, until a clutch problem effectively robbed him and Lowndes of any chance of a fourth-straight victory. Tander took advantage of a safety car restart late in the race, establishing a comfortable buffer ahead of second-placed Rick Kelly, who was holding up faster cars. Kelly would eventually succumb in the final laps but Tander didnt blink as Jason Richards and Lee Holdsworth loomed, notching up his second career win on The Mountain and the six Bathurst title for HRT."--Container insert.
