The film serves as Garrone's English-language debut and interweaves three separate story strands bookended by brief bits in which Italians Alba Rohrwacher and Massimo Ceccherini play a street circus family. In one tale Salma Hayek plays a jealous queen who forfeits her husband's life. In another, Vincent Cassel plays a king whose passion is stoked by two mysterious sisters.

VERY loosely based on the fanciful writings of 17th century Italian poet Giambattista Basile, Matteo Garrone’s three interweaving fairy tales provide a sumptuous banquet for the eyes even if he leaves little for the intellect to chew on. Set in a quasi-medieval Europe with distressed damsels, hilltop castles, and treacherous chasms, Garrone fills your plate with fantastical asides like a king doing underwater battle with a sea monster or a pair of impossible twins whose fates are inextricably tied to one another, and he binds his separate tales with a traveling troupe of performers who always seem to show up at the right (or wrong) moment. Diehard purists will balk at the idea of fairy tales played out for the sake of pageantry alone—there are no lofty lessons to be learned here other than the vague price one pays for vanity or honour or obsession—but the costumes are beautiful, the “Once upon a time…” settings straight out of every bedtime story you ever heard, and a touch of magic graces every frame. Garrone and cinematographer Peter Suschitzky’s knowledge of light and colour turn some scenes into Renaissance paintings while the set design and art departments make sure monsters are monstrous and not one leaf is out of place. But the ample sex and bloodletting ensures these are not the kind of stories you’d want to tuck your kids in with.

Interesting, multi-plot line story format. Each plot takes a pinch from several well known tales. Unique and engaging.

.
If anything actually happens in this movie it must have been after the 45-minute mark - which is when I turned it off.

Unusual but oddly intriguing story telling, vacillating between silly comedy and horrific violence.
Note: the effort spent on elaborate makeup and sets (e.g. skinned woman, underwater monster) seemed wasted on-screen due to shadowy, dim lighting.

if you are looking for fairy tales, do not judge this DVD by its jacket.
These tales are graphically bloody, with two or three very explicit sex scenes. The stories are nightmarish, and if there is a moral to each, it is obfuscated by the gruesomeness of the production.
As to the group age suitability ... none.
I would attribute it 0 stars, but I will be generous and give it 1 just for the creative costumes.

Some very vivid characters, imaginative set designs and fine costumes, but the choppy and jerky editing ruins the continuity. Fun, but hardly memorable.

Brilliant! Stories written ages ago can be seen in a contemporary light. A message for people in all stages of life. Never hold back your sons, pick your own partner, never crave being young, be careful what you lust after, don't think you know what is best for another, and know what to value. The scenes are breath taking and the costumes exquisite. The acting wonderful. A real message for people of today. A movie teens should watch.

It wont have broad appeal, but the costumes and the locations/ sets are lush and other worldly. A little long for my tastes, but interesting take on three stories written centuries ago.

Birth is always stained by death. And death, in turn, is simply one element of birth
and not even the most dramatic one. ... You want a child? Every new life calls for a life to be lost. The equilibrium of the world must be maintained.
===
Who sings with such a beautiful voice? Where have you been hiding all this time?
... Don't hide! Stay out in the sunlight. Please, stay out to warm your cold king. Oh I see! So you want to play hard to get. Well, so be it. I have fought many wars in my time. And even the most impregnable fortress surrenders at last.
===
Before long you will be old enough to be married and then you will depart these walls forever.
-Well... If that is indeed the case, then find me a husband.
A husband? What sort of husband would you like?
-Well... I'd like my husband to be courageous and strong and... handsome.
I'm sure such a man exists, but until we find him, please, do not agitate yourself over a future none of us can predict. ...
