Opinion

From Library Staff

Joyce's pick: Set in the tinder dry Australian outback this mystery thriller has some genuine twists and turns, and I didn't guess the killer!
Jane Harper's writing is wonderfully descriptive and beautifully evokes a small rural community in the midst of a drought and with death at its door.

Worth reading for the gripping account of Australian small town residents trying to cope with the catastrophic effects of a years-long drought, a recent murder-suicide, and another, decades-old tragedy. Such a vivid sense of place and character that I finished the novel feeling like I had actually been in rural Australia and gotten to know the residents. Unfortunately, three weakness in the book: 1) the detective/narrator is a r ather dull by-the-numbers "outsider with a haunted past", 2) the present day whodunit was rather easy to guess, 3)the past whodunit, where the most likely suspect turns out to be guilty. I look forward to more from Ms. Harper, but I'm not sure another novel featuring Agent Falk would be my first choice. I would be far more interested in a continuing series with the bar owner as a recurring character!

An apparent murder-suicide of a young family in the outback of Australia, leaves a small town shaken and searching for answers.
Admittedly, I'm not a mystery fan, so my opinion of this book comes with those biases. I thought the story plodded along. Nothing really happened until the last 100 pages of the book. The ending had some twists, but nothing particularly shocking.
This is a potential series with the same cop/investigator continuing on in further books. I wouldn't read a second one.

What a wonderful find - another new author for me! I love reading thrillers, mysteries, suspense novels and Jane Harper's debut novel, The Dry, was great. Actually more than great - wonderful, suspenseful, could hardly put down to sleep as checked it out one day and finished it the next. Cannot wait for her #2/2 book featuring Aaron Falk, Federal Agent, who is featured again.

Just a good read. The setting is in Australia and part of the country is in a drought. The author does a good job having the reader feel the parched and dry land and its effect on the people. Good mystery.

Excellent crime fiction that also has great character development. A combination that is hard to come by. Highly recommended.

For me this novel read like a pot that started as a simmer that little by little without knowing slowly increased its temperature to a full boil. Harper starts slow - for me almost painfully slow, and deftly builds the story to the point where you are compelled and engrossed to figure out who committed the murders of the Hadler family. Was it Luke, who killed his family or could it have been someone else? A chilling thought for a small town already tense with struggles of a 2 year drought and now reeling from triple murder that has shaken the already fragile community. Luke's childhood friend federal agent Aaron Falks, struggles to investigate the murders, and at the same time must face his own past and open up old wounds that were to remain hidden.

Debut author Jane Harper brilliantly captures the atmosphere of the dry and smouldering Australian countryside, you almost feel the crackling of the vegetation and dust in the air and oppressive heat as you turn the pages. A great read for readers who enjoy a strong sense of place, as well as a plot that is entangled with twists and turns and revelations that only a small town can highlight. Enjoy this bit of literary tourism to the countryside of Australia.

Wow! What an awesome debut novel! It didn't disappoint from the beginning to end.I really enjoyed the Australian backdrop as an added feature. Interesting how she wrote of the past differently than the present, kept the pages turning! I loved all the characters and the twists and turns it took. What a fascinating journey, you will love this book if you love mysteries and good characters. I highly recommend it.

4.5 stars. I really loved this atmospheric mystery. It was beautifully written with very descriptive writing. The characters were complex and interesting. The setting was so well described that at times it felt like I could smell, taste and experience everything as it was happening. There were several twists and I did not guess whodunnit until the end. I'm crossing my fingers that there will be a follow up to this amazing book.
