The Secret of Spirit Bay by Stephen Barker is a journey through Maori culture. The story is set in 1879 from the perspective of a boy named Tom. Tom is an English boy who is visiting New Zealand to see his father. The book takes you back and forth through Thomas’s new life in New Zealand and his voyage to New Zealand. But Tom finds there are many secrets to Spirits Bay and knows he must protect it before it’s too late.
