River God is evocative, action packed and full of larger than life characters. The narrator- technically a slave though a very well regarded one at that- is a flawed character, and though he comes across as incredibly vain he somehow manages to be immensely likeable and memorable. Wilbur Smith paints a vivid portrait of Ancient Egypt and life along the River Nile, you do feel as though you are really standing on its banks. The action comes thick and fast, making this a page-turner to the end.
