This book offers the interesting perspective of two 19th century abolitionists, who have hardly met any black people in their lives, coming face to face with the realities of slavery in Antigua. The descriptions of human beings being treated like livestock (or worse) are depressing and sometimes heartbreaking but the novel is not without hope. I'm sorry to see the Glamourist Histories come to an end but if the characters had a say I'm sure having a life and death roller coaster ride transition into some kind of happily ever after would have been much appreciated by all involved.
