#8 A bloody fine read! A gruesome murder set in the 1860s in a Scottish Highland crofting community. Short-listed for the Man Booker this was a quick, engaging and atmospheric read.
It also makes a great companion novel to Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. Burial Rites is set in Iceland in 1829 and the plot also revolves around a crime, a trial and grim descriptions of working class lives set in a rugged marginal landscapes. Agnes Magnusdottir is perhaps the more reliable of the two narrators! Read both I say.
