Best Novel- 35-year-old Jenny appears to handle being an adult, she owns her own home and works for a successful online magazine, but she is obsessed with being ‘liked’ by her virtual friends, is trying to work through a recent break up, and attempting to cope with her eccentric mothers sudden presence on her doorstep. Witty and insightful, ‘Adults’ is a fresh and relevant story about a nefarious modern addiction- social media- and the danger of neglecting the reality of our own happiness.

Best Classic – It was a joy to reread Emily Bronte’s brooding classic of love, hate, and anti heroes, (lots of anti heroes), set against the dramatic backdrop of the Yorkshire moors. I enjoyed reliving Cathy and Heathcliff’s tumultuous love affair a decade after my first experience, only to find it every bit as gripping as it seemed aged 13 (albeit with Heathcliff a lot less fanciable and more, well, cranky and less prone to showering than I remembered him).

Best Non fiction – One of the most popular books on art ever written, EM Gombrich’s masterpiece spans the story of art from cave painting to early modernist work. Sadly this 70-year-old narrative does reflect some grating biases of the time -(there was more than one female artist in history thanks Ernest (grate grate); other cultures do not get classified as ‘primitive’ just because they are not European (grate, grate), and ‘history of art’ does mean discussing other great international artists that were not European more than 5 percent of the time (ooh that’s a lot of grating…). However, if you are looking for a very accessible yet knowledgeable and astute analysis of -Western!- art, this is a tremendous introduction, and a must read for art lovers.
