Is it a horror, a thriller, what? It doesn't matter really - it's gruesome and compelling and you can't look away. The acting is pretty great too, especially from the main character Sara and the mysterious man who says little but is a scene stealer.

This dystopia is one that feels not dissimilar to ones you have read or watched before. But there is something special in it. It sings at times in a poetic fashion, but to me the book's strength isn't those luminous poetic moments but the harsh dry tightening realism. There's a brutality and the life of the main character Eilish becomes smaller and smaller. You really are in the widening gyre, suffocating. This dystopia is one that feels not dissimilar to ones you have read or watched before. But there is something special in it. Michel Faber is always a good read - and never in the same style or on the same topic. Here he looks at music, and our attachment to the artists and bands we love, how records and CDs fit into our lives, and lots more about loving music.

This was fun and informative dive into history. The author read the book and sounded perpetually on the edge of breaking into hysterical laughter, which was a bit disconcerting until you got used to it. I wasn't fussed on the framing of the book as a dinner party with historical guests; I don't think that worked. But I did like the range of people and topics, and teasing out of ideas. This was fun and informative dive into history. I loved the first book in the series, but the second is even better. There were moments when I went "Ha" and laughed at loud, but I also did some crying. Richard Osman is quite the writer, and having his sophomore effort be better than the debut bodes well for the rest of the series. The wonderful Lesley Manville again brings all the characters to joyous life.I loved the first book in the series, but the second is even better. A true and incredibly dramatic 18th century story of shipwreck and survival, and how the story played its way through history and influenced writers and thinkers in the years to come. David Grann has a way of storytelling that's so visceral and gives you sensory overload. Dion Graham reads the audiobook of it really well and adds to that feeling of being in the moment.A true and incredibly dramatic 18th century story of shipwreck and survival, and how the story played its way through history and influenced writers and thinkers in the years to come. This was my favourite New Zealand novel of 2023. It's exquisite in both detail and emotion. There is muddy grief in this story, there's madness and confusion - and yet - it is so very beautiful. I loved the characters Yasuko and Dinah, felt for them.

I picked this one up randomly from a display. This combination of art and biography works beautifully well. It's part of a series of volumes by publishers Thames & Hudson called "The Illustrators" which also features Raymond Briggs and Posy Simmonds.
