How to watch a horror film | Speaker Series @ Tūranga
When we watch a scary movie, what is it that we see, hear and feel? How do these films create effective stories that also make us experience sometimes challenging emotions and feel things deep in our bodies? Join Dr Erin Harrington as she discusses some of the ways films ‘make meaning’ through image, colour, editing, story and sound, and how appreciating the craft of filmmaking can help us better understand – or even develop – one’s love of horror.

Dr Erin Harrington is a Senior Lecturer Above the Bar in the English and Cinema Studies programmes at the University of Canterbury Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha, and the editor of the respected arts criticism blog Flat City Field Notes. She’s an internationally recognised expert on the horror genre, and is convinced that there is a scary movie for everyone.
