Traditional Tongan necklaces called Kahoa are worn as a sign of love, respect, honour, and celebration during special occasions like graduations, weddings, and cultural dances. 

The 2026 theme for Tonga Language Week is Ko 'etau hiva, ko e fe'unu mahu'inga ia ki he mo'ui 'a e Tonga - Our music is a vital strand of our Tongan culture.

We're are going to celebrate by practising tauhi vā- cultivating meaningful connections and mutual respect across our diverse island cultures by crafting ribbon necklaces, creating celebrations to wear with pride or give to a friend to show them some 'ofa (love)

This library event is an educational activity meant to celebrate regional connections. The contemporary ribbon-weaving techniques used here are a respectful tribute to the traditional kahoa design. They do not replace or represent authentic, sacred Tongan heritage craft.
