Craft Snippets with Christine Powell
Craft Snippets is a way to learn about artisan crafts from enthusiasts and experts who love to share. This month we will hear from Christine Powell
Christine’s creative journey has taken her from the frozen beauty of Antarctica to the colourful warmth of knitting — and eventually, to writing a book about both.
In 1997, she left Southern California on a whim to spend a summer working in Antarctica. One season became nine summers and nine winter-overs; a 20-year, life-changing adventure which included meeting her photographer husband, Anthony.
Knitting became an important part of Christine’s Antarctic life, and her love of stranded colourwork and hat design ultimately led her to co-author Knitting in Antarctica: 28 Beautiful Hat Patterns With Stories of Life 'on the Ice'.
Now based in Kaiapoi, New Zealand, Christine continues to follow her creative curiosity through knitting, crochet and many other crafts. She believes there are no mistakes in creating, only opportunities to learn, experiment and grow.
Come along to hear Christine speak about her craft and after the talk we will look at craft books new to the library as well as chat about what is happening or coming up craft wise in and around Canterbury. We look forward to seeing you here.
