  I was a latecomer to this. The sixth and final volume was released earlier this year. Jeff Lemire is the Margaret Atwood of comics!

  Hardboiled crime with added tenticles! The Brubaker/Phillips combo come up with yet another incredible collaboration (check out Incognito, Criminal and Sleeper if you need proof).

  Throw that popcorn away! Here's where the edge is being cut in superhero comics today. Jonathan Hickman can do no wrong (well, except for that thing with the polar bear in 2012, but I'd almost forgotten that).

  Any volume of Usagi Yojimbo is always going to be a shoe-in for best of lists. But you know that, right?

  More Hickman greatness. Only one volume so far, but this could be the best thing he's written yet! The last couple of chapters? Wow!

  I've always regarded Vaughn as one of the most over-rated writers in comics (Pride of Baghdad anyone? and... Lost? yikes). But, borrowing heavily from the Book of Whedon, he's on to something here.

  The Magnum P.I. of the Marvel Universe (no, really!). One of the most stylish looking series of the year (check out the 'DVD extra' in volume two about the incredible color palate).

  This volume hasn't appeared on a library shelf yet (edit: it has now). But, Scott Snyder continues his great run on Batman with the best Joker story since The Killing Joke.
