Always tough to pick favorites, but here are a selection of my top reads for 2023.

  • Shūzō san has said the first twelve volumes of Blood On The Tracks are just the prologue. I'll be here for the duration though. Hands down, one of the best manga I've ever read.
Graphic NovelNew York : Vertical Comics, 2020. — GRAPHIC NOVEL
  • Vol.5 marks the start of the second big story arc in SiKtC. I just read the final issue of the arc (which will be collected in Vol.7 soon) last night. So good. My second favorite ongoing series of recent years. (You need to ask? Usagi…
Graphic NovelLos Angeles, California : BOOM! Studios, 2022. — GRAPHIC NOVEL
  • Documenting 6 months of her battle with depression, you'll likely read nothing else like It's Lonely At The Centre Of The World this year (or any other year?). An incredibly powerful personal work. (And her art is fantastic to boot!)
Graphic NovelPortland, Oregon : Image Comics, [2023] — 741.5 THO
  • So cleverly constructed. It would be a major spoiler to tell you why Black Water Lilies is so brilliant. Just go read it!
    Graphic Novel[Seattle] : Magnetic Press, 2022. — GRAPHIC NOVEL
  • It's Usagi Yojimbo. Only a dummy would leave this off an end of year list.
Graphic NovelSan Diego : IDW, [2022] — YOUNG ADULT GRAPHIC NOVEL
  • Supergirl

    Woman of Tomorrow

    King, Tom, 1978-
If it weren't for Mr King's name on the cover I probably wouldn't have checked this out at all. What a mistake that would have been. Best "superhero" comicbook of 2023? Could be.
Graphic NovelBurbank, California : DC Comics, [2022] — YOUNG ADULT GRAPHIC NOVEL
  • A fantastic conclusion to the Deadly Class saga. Don't be put off if your only brush with the students at King's Dominion has been the ho-hum TV series. As is usually the way, the source material is far superior to the adaptation.
Graphic NovelBerkeley : Image Comics, [2022] — GRAPHIC NOVEL
  • I'm extremely late to the Megahex party (I have plans to catch up over the next few weeks). Certainly not the Megg and Mogg you likely already know (or is it?), Easily the most hilarious book I've read this year. Be warned though, If you…
BookSeattle, Washington : Fantagraphics Books, [2014] — GRAPHIC NOVEL
  • A masterclass in comic book storytelling. Look no further for this years best example of why comics are so cool!
Graphic NovelPortland, Oregon : Image Comics, [2022] — YOUNG ADULT GRAPHIC NOVEL
  • I seriously don't understand why Lazarus isn't one of the most talked about comics on the shelves.
Graphic NovelPortland, Oregon : Image Comics, [2022] — GRAPHIC NOVEL
  • Tombs

    Junji Ito Story Collection

    Itō, Junji, 1963-
Western publishers are certainly making up for lost time with a steady supply of new Junji Itō anthologies in recent years. Having said that though, they are never less than excellent, and Tombs is probably his strongest collection since…
Graphic NovelSan Francisco : VIZ Media, LLC, [2023] — GRAPHIC NOVEL
  • I went in to this expecting very little. Seriously, who needs another "what did Bruce Wayne do before becoming Batman" story. Little did I know, Chip Zdarsky has written the definitive "what did Bruce Wayne do before becoming Batman"…
Graphic NovelBurbank, California : DC Comics, [2023] — GRAPHIC NOVEL
