Local History: Woolston
Woolston developed on the lower Heathcote River as a working class residential, commercial and industrial area along the line of Ferry Road. The wharves on the river were crucial in Christchurch’s early transport history. In 1874 there were eight wool-scouring plants, seven tanneries, one soap and candle work, several glue factories and later a rubber factory along the river. The village formed along Ferry Road with people moving closer to these factories, enabling them to walk to work. The elevated river terraces allowed farmers to grow oats, fruits and vegetables for the city on their small holdings. In July 1893 Woolston was proclaimed a Borough. It amalgamated with Christchurch City in 1921. A Christchurch City Libraries list.
