"The theme of 'Learning to be Rotuman' is the relationship between the culture of the Rotumans, a Polynesian people living on a remote South Pacific island, and their patterns of socialisation and of formal education. Dr. Howard is especially concerned with the effects of culture upon the learning process. He applies the findings of this study to the problems of urban American education, where the culture of the ghetto is often in conflict with that of the schools; specifically, he attacks the "deficiency models" now in use in dealing with culturally different children."--Back cover.
