"Prophet at the Gate" is a biography of Norman Murray Bell (1887-1962), a pacifist and peace activist from New Zealand. He was imprisoned as a war resister during World War I. Before and during World War II he was active in various peace and anti-war organisations. Later in life, his "reverence for life" philosophy led him to promote vegetarianism and animal welfare. This book uses Bell's life as a lens through which to view the history of peace and anti-war movements in New Zealand over a period of more than a century, from a Maori community committed to nonviolent resistance in the 1880s to the declaration of Nuclear Free New Zealand in the 1980s. An afterword gives a sketch of the life of Larry Ross, the leader of the Nuclear Free New Zealand movement."--
